Cherokee-Legends.net will bring you the customs, folklore and legends of the Indians of North America. We will also bring you stories and legends of the Cherokee Indians. Why the Cherokee Indians?Heritage
My grandmother was a full blooded Tsalagi, aka Cherokee and therefore I am drawn towards the ways of the Cherokee. Tsalagi is actually a Choctaw word for "cave-land-people".
The original Cherokee people referred to themselves as the Ani-Yunwiya. Ani-Yunwiya is the word in Cherokee that means "The People," or "People of God." My people believe in the Spirit that unites all things. I've been taught that as a Cherokee woman that I represent the life force. My word has great value. That man reveres me as he reveres Mother Earth and his own spirit.
From Cheewa James, Modoc 1996 come these wise words:
Learn how to withhold judgment
Learn to listen
Get in touch with your own inner self
Look at life with joy
Don't ever cry over something that cannot cry over you.
